The neighborhood
The Gran Vía centenary is one of the main arteries of the city and one of its most emblematic avenues. Its creation marked the beginning of the modernization of the city with the construction of the first skyscrapers of the country and the incursion of the architectural currents of the moment from the United States. The project, designed to decongest the chaotic center of the city – which was formed by a network of alleys from which twenty-two disappeared – was carried out in three sections, beginning with its confluence with Alcalá Street. The first of them continued to the Red de San Luis, the second to the Plaza del Callao and, finally, the third continued to the Plaza de España. Each one of them reflected the new architecture of the years in which they were made. Because the project had to respect three religious buildings – the Oratory of Caballero de Gracia, the church of San José and the church of San Francisco de Borja – the layout of the avenue ended up being more irregular than expected. The result is a magnificent set of buildings that includes some as emblematic as the Metropolis, the Telefónica building, the Casino, the Capitol Building or the Callao cinema.
